Thousands of meters underground, the drill bit penetrates oil and gas reservoirs as thin as book pages; the downhole probe serves as the "eyes" and steering reference for drilling. Against the backdrop of ultra-thin oil reservoir development, the existing probe with ±0.2° inclination error and ±1° azimuth error can no longer support the efficient development of 1–2 m ultra-thin reservoirs, where reservoir penetration rate is often less than 60%. Facing increasingly stringent downhole operational requirements, Liuhe Weiye has adopted a two-stage upgrade roadmap. First, iterative optimization based on existing hardware delivers a new directional sensor. Its accuracy is greatly improved through optimized circuitry, manufacturing processes and calibration algorithms, and overseas field trials have been completed. Second, breaking away from the original framework to reconstruct base components, the company has developed a brand-new directional sensor built on MEMS architecture, achieving systematic innovation from sensing elements to calibration logic.
Regarding technical breakthroughs for the existing probe, the R&D team focused on two core areas. First, load power interference is eliminated by redesigning the circuit board and algorithms to resolve differential interference imposed on fluxgate sensors by varying operating currents. Second, full-temperature-range precise calibration and compensation are realized. A refined error compensation model for the three-axis accelerometer and three-axis magnetometer is established to resolve DIP error divergence and QC check failures under high inclination, ensuring linear output under downhole HTHP conditions. With the adoption of high-precision calibration using Helmholtz coils, inclination error is reduced from ±0.2° to ±0.1°, and azimuth error from ±1° to ±0.5°, doubling the accuracy of both parameters. Field tests of the upgraded tool were conducted in overseas client horizontal wells ranging from 0° to 87°. All measurements satisfy the limits of Gtotal ≤ 2 mg and Btotal ≤ 200 nT, passing QC verification. Client feedback confirms performance meets international standards. After the upgrade, reservoir penetration rate rises from below 60% to over 95%. This unlocks commercial production for ultra-thin oil zones and marginal fault-block reserves, reduces collision risks in dense well patterns and hazards during complex well operations, and provides a more reliable sensing foundation for intelligent drilling.
1.Lower frequency of downhole calibration: MEMS devices exhibit superior long-term stability of bias and scale factor compared with traditional quartz accelerometers, minimizing shutdowns for in-hole calibration.
2.Dramatically enhanced resolution: the Analog-to-Digital (AD) measurement range is increased by 10 times, enabling detection of subtle attitude variations under highly dynamic operating conditions.
3.Shock-resistant solid-state construction: there are no suspended moving mechanical parts, improving vibration and shock resistance, enhancing data validity and instrument survivability under harsh downhole conditions.
